The establishment of our department was decided in 1999. Master’s programs in Old Turkish Language and Turkish Literature began in the 2002–2003 and 2004–2005 academic years, respectively, and the undergraduate program in Turkish Language and Literature started in the 2005–2006 academic year.
The department, consisting of the subfields of Modern Turkish Language, Modern Turkish Literature, Old Turkish Language, Old Turkish Literature, and Turkish Folk Literature, covers historical Turkic languages (Old Turkic, Karakhanid, Old Ottoman, etc.), Turkish grammar, linguistics, Ottoman-period Turkish literature, modern Turkish literature in all its aspects from the Tanzimat era to the present, folk literature, and professional English.
Students who complete the four-year program graduate with a total of 147 credits. Our department aims to provide students with a comparative and interdisciplinary perspective in their studies.
At our department located on the Davutpaşa Campus, there are five subfields specializing in Old Turkish Literature, Modern Turkish Literature, Folk Literature, Old Turkish Language, and Modern Turkish Language. Our academic staff carry out teaching and research activities in these fields.
Our department currently employs 4 Professors, 5 Associate Professors, 8 Assistant Professors, 2 Research Assistants, and 1 administrative staff member.
